The third-party software of BlackBerry

For my fourth post, I’ll be talking about BlackBerry’s third-party software…Just to let all WordPress readers know that what will be put into this post won’t be long but short…

THIRD-PARTY SOFTWARE

BlackBerry devices require third-party software that has availability with full-featured database management systems. Also, the database management systems have use for supporting clients of customer relationship and other applications that potentially manages a large volume of complex data. In 2011 of March, RIM made an announcement on an optional Android player that is able to play applications for the Android system being developed as it would be available for the BlackBerry PlayBook which is the first entry into the tablet market by RIM. On August 24, 2011, Bloomberg News had a report on unofficial rumors saying that BlackBerry devices would have its ability of running Android applications when RIM brings out  QNX and their Android app  player to BlackBerry. On October 20, 2011, RIM made its official announcement on Android applications that are able to run and be unmodified from the BlackBerry tablet and the newest BlackBerry phones by using the newest version of its operating system.

The connectivity of BlackBerry

For my third post, I’ll be talking about the connectivity of BlackBerry…

CONNECTIVITY

Regards of BlackBerry’s connectivity, their smartphones can integrate into an email system within an organization through a software package called BlackBerry Software Server (BES) and BlackBerry Software Server (BES) from versions 5 and of 10. About BES, their versions have availability for other software like Microsoft Exchange, Lotus Domino, Novell GroupWise and even Google Apps. As usual with BES, organizations that have multiple users would run this software right onto their network while individuals are able to use an email service of a wireless provider without having themselves to install the software. BlackBerry devices that either OS 10 or later can also be directly managed by Microsoft Exchange Server with Exchange ActiveSync polices either in the same way that iOS or Android devices can do. For BES, there are some third-party companies that provide hosted solutions of their software. With BES, what they use for identifying the device is a BlackBerry PIN. At one time, BlackBerry provided a free software of BES called BES Express (BESX).

The primary feature of BES is used for relaying email from a corporate mailbox to BlackBerry phone. The BES then monitors the user’s mailbox to relay new messages to the phone via BlackBerry’s Network Operations Center (NOC) and the user’s wireless provider. With NOC, this feature can be known as push email because of all new emails, contacts and entries (task, memopad, calendar) immediately pushing out to the BlackBerry device. Also, BlackBerry gives support of poling email through third-party applications. The only thing that BlackBerry can understand with is their built-in messaging system and how they can receive messages from either BES or BIS as these services can handle the connections to the mail providers of the user. For BlackBerry’s device storage, it enables the mobile user to access all data off-line in areas without needing wireless service. The BES would send the latest data after the wireless service is reconnected by the user.

What BES provides with are phones that have a TCP/IP connection accessed through a component of MDS, a connection service allowing custom application development to use data streams on BlackBerry devices based on the platform of Sun Microsystems Java ME. As of an addition to BES, it provides network security  either in the form of Triple DES or recently in encryption of AES of all data traveling between the BlackBerry phone and BlackBerry Enterprise Server. Recently with more versions of the BlackBerry platform, the MDS is no longer required for wireless data access. Without MDS, BlackBerry phones can get internet access but the BES/MDS is still a requirement for secure email, data access and applications that require WAP from carriers which do not allow WAP access. A primary alternative of BlackBerry Enterprise Server to be used is BlackBerry internet Service. BIS is internationally available in 91 countries but is primarily developed for the average consumer rather than for the business consumer. Furthermore, BIS allows users to access POP3, IMAP and email accounts of Outlook Web App without having connection with BES. With BIS, it allows access of 10 email accounts including proprietary as well as public email accounts like Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo and AOL.

Also, BIS supports the push capabilities of BlackBerry’s other various applications. Regards of BIS, what utilizes the applications of push capabilities are RIM’s various applications that BlackBerry develops like the clients of Instant Messaging. For BIS’s use, data plans do require of MMS, PIN, interactive gaming, mapping and trading applications. Although BlackBerry runs their service, it would run through a mobile service provider as usual. Around October 10, 2010 in 10:00 UTC, millions of BlackBerry users have been affected due to an outage that occurred in Europe, Africa and the Middle East. The following day also had an another outage which made a huge effect on BlackBerry and its service. By October 12, 2011, BIS went down in North America as RIM made attributions of overloading data regarding switch failures in two of their data centres at Waterloo in Canada and Slough in England as the cause of service disruptions.

The hardware and software of BlackBerry

For my second writing post, what I’ll be talking about is the hardware and software of BlackBerry…

HARDWARE

For BlackBerry, modern LTE phones that are based can be the Z10 which has a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Plus 1.5 GHz Dual-Core CPU and an Adreno 225 1.5-1.7 GHz GPU. For other BlackBerry phones being GSM-based, they have incorporation with either the 7, 9 or 11 processor of ARM. Some of their models would have a 1.2 GHz MSM8655 Snapdragon Processor 768 MB of storage memory and 8GB of on-board storage. The Curve 9360, an entry-level model features a Marvell PXA940 that clocks at 800 MHz. Previously, the Bold 9000, a BlackBerry device was equipped with the Intel XScale 624 MHz processor. A newer version of the Bold 9000’s processor is the Bold 9700 which clocks at the same speed. The Curve 8520 features a 512 MHz processor while smartphones of BlackBerry 8000 such as the 8700 and Pearl are based on the 312 MHz ARM XScale ARMv5TE PXA900.

The latest flagship phone to be given by BlackBerry is the Z30 which is based on a 5″ Super AMOLED,  a 1280×780 resolution at a 295 ppl 24-bit color depth and is powered by Quad-Graphics and Qualcomm’s Dual Core 1.7 GHz MSM8960T Pro. The first BlackBerry system to be released in late 2015 of November was with an Android operating system, the 192 gram/6.77 ounce Priv. What BlackBerry’s expectations were is to sell their smartphone in 31 countries by February 28, 2016 as it was initially available in four countries. More about BlackBerry’s hardware, The Qualcomm 8992 Snapdragon 808 Hexa-Core, 64-bit, Adreno 418, 600 MHz GPU with 3GB RAM processor. With their unit, it equips with a 5.4 inch curved (2560 x 1440) OLED display and a sliding QWERTY keyboard that hides while not used. Also available is Google’s voice recognition which allows for e-mails to be dictated. What the Priv retains is their 10 best features of BlackBerry.  As said about the Priv, its 3, 410mAh battery is to be provided by 22.5 hours of mixed use. Moreover, the 18-megapixel camera with a Schneider-Kreuznach lens can even record 4K video and a secondary selfie camera is also provided. There were several apps that had uniqueness to the Priv during availability by the middle of December from GooglePlay.

SOFTWARE

Here is BlackBerry 10, a new operating system that is released for Z10 and Q10 which are the two new models of BlackBerry. During 2012 of BlackBerry World, Thorsten Heins, the CEO of RIM had a demonstration of some of the new features for the OS. Other new features included were:

  • A camera of photos being able to rewind frame-by-frame and allow selections of its best shots
  • A keyboard with intelligence, prediction and adaptation
  • A user interface designed around the idea of “peek” and “flow” with a base of gesture

Through the storefront of BlackBerry World, the BlackBerry 10 devices has apps that are either available for free or within its cost.  A proprietary multitasking environment RIM developed was BlackBerry OS, the previous operating system for developing older BlackBerry devices. About BlackBerry OS, their operating system has a design of use for devices with input such as the track wheel,  track bail and track pad. Also, the OS provides support for Java MIDP 1.0  and WAP 1.2. Some of their previous versions had wireless synchronization which were allowed with Microsoft Exchange Server email and calendar as well as with Lotus Domino email. The 5.0 version of OS provides a subset of MIDP 2.0 and can allow complete wireless activation and synchronization with Exchange email, calendar, tasks, notes and contacts and even add support for Novell GroupWise and Lotus Notes. The most recent device launched in 2011 was BlackBerry OS as it had main features like the Curve 9360, Torch 9810, Bold 9900/9930, Curve 9310/9320 and Torch 9850/9860.

Before 2013, App World was known as BlackBerry App World but now it is called as BlackBerry World. Through BlackBerry World, their devices have apps which are available within them. As well with third-party developers, they can write software by using APIS and BlackBerry APIS. For any application, they can make use of functionality which is certainly restricted and should digitally sign so that it can make association with RIM’s developer account.  What RIM provides are tools to develop applications and themes through BlackBerry. Through BlackBerry World and Over the Air, applications and themes can be loaded onto their devices either from its mobile browser or its desktop manager.  With BlackBerry devices as well as Android, iOS and platforms of Windows Phone, they are able to use BlackBerry Messenger (BBM), software for sending and receiving instant messages, voice notes, images and videos via BlackBerry PIN.

With BlackBerry cellphones, most messages can be free of charge as long as they have a data plan. In 2013 of April, there was an announcement  given by BlackBerry regarding their streaming  music service and BBM music to be shut down since its two years of their launch which was active. On June 2, 2013, BlackBerry closed its service of BBM music.  In 2014 of July, a new feature for BlackBerry OS 10.3 and BlackBerry Passport hardware was revealed by BlackBerry which is BlackBerry Assistant. It is like a digital personal assistant that can help others to keep themselves productive, informed and organized. In 2014 of December, a healthcare-focused data provider to help give doctors the ability of accessing patients’ genetic data was launched and it is called NantHealth. It is a secure cancer genome browser that is used on the BlackBerry Passport smartphone.

All about Blackberry

For my first post, I’ll be talking all about Blackberry…

BlackBerry is the original brand of  wireless handheld devices (tablets, smartphones, etc.) and services as they are designed and market by BlackBerry Ltd which is formerly known as Research in Motion Ltd (RIM). The first device to be marketed by RIM is the Inter@ctive Pager 900. It is a type of device  which is formed of a clamshell that can allow it to do paging in two ways. The Inter@ctive Pager 800 was then created for IBM which bought worth of them for a US amount of $10 million. This was after the success of the first Inter@ctive Pager device. The next device to be designed by RIM was the Inter@ctive Pager 950 but the very first device to carry the BlackBerry name was the BlackBerry 850, an email pager. Although the 950 was identical within its appearance, the 850 was meant to be the first device to integrate email and the name Inter@ctive Pager was no longer to give its brand for the device.

Most of the recent devices BlackBerry usually designs are the BlackBerry Priv, BlackBerry Passport (original, AT&T version and Silver edition) BlackBerry Classic and BlackBerry Leap although the BlackBerry Z30 is also still considered as one of the “second generation” devices of BlackBerry 10. With BlackBerry, their devices would have a interface of the user varied by its model and most of them feature of a physical QWERTY keyboard. For newer generations, they would rely on a multi-touch screen and a virtual keyboard. BlackBerry Priv which runs Android was officially announced in September and was released in November. Furthermore, BlackBerry’s devices can be used mainly for stuff like video recording, photo taking, playing music and even other functions such as web browsing, messaging (email and instant) and the multi-platform service of BlackBerry.

As we all know, BlackBerry is  considered as one of the vendors for major smartphones in the world specializing in secure communications and productivity. For its own use on devices that are made prior to the new BlackBerry 10 Operating System (BBOS 7 and earlier), the consumer BlackBerry Internet Service is available in 91 countries worldwide on over 500 mobile service operators using various mobile service technologies. As of September 2013,  there are 85 million subscribers of BlackBerry worldwide but that number drops down to 46 million from September 2014.  Started from November 2013, BlackBerry Messenger was run on multiple platforms including Android, iOS and Windows Phone and up to June 2015 it got 260 million new users.

As of now from September 2015, BlackBerry announces that it would launch a new smartphone on the platform of Android called Priv. What they expect of Priv is that it should work with many of the world’s carriers and the four major carriers in the U.S.
